Copyright.
How to tell us that something on Ranked infringes your copyright, how to respond if your content was removed, and what happens to repeat infringers.
Our approach
Ranked respects the rights of creators and expects its members to do the same. Members post reviews, replies, profile details and profile photos. If any of that copies your work without permission, send us a notice and we will act on it. Ranked responds to notices under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512.
Film information and poster art come from TMDB, not from Ranked members. If your notice is about that artwork, send it to us and we will remove it from Ranked where we can. You can also contact TMDB directly.
Where to send a notice
Email copyright notices to support@rankedmovies.app with “Copyright notice” in the subject line. Ranked’s designated agent is being registered with the US Copyright Office, and the agent’s name and postal address will appear here once that is complete.
Use this route only for copyright and other intellectual property complaints. For anything else, report the post, reply or profile in the app.
What a notice must include
The law requires a written notice with all of the following. We may not be able to act on a notice that leaves something out.
- Your physical or electronic signature. A typed full name works for email.
- The copyrighted work you say is infringed. If there are several, a representative list is fine.
- The material on Ranked you say is infringing, with enough detail for us to find it: the member’s handle, the film the review or reply is on, and a screenshot or a description of the post.
- Your name, postal address, phone number and email address.
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.
What happens next
When we receive a complete notice, we remove the material or disable access to it promptly. We tell the member who posted it that it was removed and why, and we may share a copy of the notice with them, including the name and contact details you provided. We keep a record of the notice so we can apply the repeat infringer policy below.
Knowingly misrepresenting that material is infringing can make you liable for damages under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f). If you are not sure whether a use is infringing, for example because it may be a fair use such as a short quotation in a review, consider getting advice before you send a notice.
If your content was removed
If you believe material you posted was removed by mistake or because it was misidentified, you can send a counter-notice to the same address. It must include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- The material that was removed and where it appeared on Ranked before it was removed.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good faith belief the material was removed or disabled as a result of a mistake or misidentification.
- Your name, postal address and phone number.
- A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district where your address is or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which Ranked may be found, and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.
When we receive a complete counter-notice, we send a copy to the person who sent the original notice. If they do not tell us within 10 business days that they have filed a court action to keep the material down, we restore it within 10 to 14 business days of receiving your counter-notice. Knowingly misrepresenting that material was removed by mistake can make you liable for damages.
Repeat infringers
Ranked closes the accounts of repeat infringers. Each complete notice that is not successfully answered with a counter-notice counts against the account that posted the material. An account that receives notices on three separate occasions is closed. We can close an account sooner when infringement is clear and deliberate. A closed account is deleted, and the person behind it may not open a new one.
Trademarks and other rights
The same address takes complaints about trademarks, impersonation of a brand or other intellectual property. Tell us what the right is, where it is being used on Ranked, and how to reach you. We review these complaints and remove material that breaks our terms.
